Most installation problems with wood wall panels happen before the first panel goes up. Wall prep, acclimation, and layout decisions made in the first hour determine whether the finished wall looks built or applied.
Acclimate the panels before installation
Bring the panels into the installation space and let them sit for 48 to 72 hours before installation. Stack them flat with spacers between each panel so air can circulate. If the room humidity differs from the shop humidity by more than 15 percentage points, extend the acclimation period to 5 to 7 days. For projects shipping from Los Angeles to humid states, this step is especially important.
Check the wall before you start
Check the wall with a 6-foot level before you start. The wall should be flat to within 1/8 inch over 8 feet before any panel goes up. Check for plumb as well as flat. On a slat wall, a wall that is out of plumb by more than 1/4 inch over 8 feet will be visible because the slats will not read as vertical.
Find the studs and mark them clearly
Every panel needs to be anchored into studs or blocking, not just into drywall. Mark the stud locations on the floor and ceiling with tape before the panels go up. If the stud spacing does not align with the panel layout, add blocking between studs before the panels go up.
Start from the most visible corner
Start the layout from the most visible corner so the panels are full-width there. The cut panel goes in the least visible location: behind a door, in a corner partially blocked by furniture, or at the end of a run not in the primary sightline. On a slat wall, the shadow lines make the layout more visible than on a flat panel wall.
Scribe to the ceiling and floor
Ceilings are not level. Floors are not flat. Scribing means cutting the top or bottom edge of the panel to follow the profile of the ceiling or floor exactly. Hold the panel in position and run a compass along the ceiling with the pencil marking the panel. Cut to the line.
Inside corners: miter or cope
A miter is the cleanest result but requires the corner to be within 2 degrees of square. A cope is more forgiving of out-of-square corners. A trim piece is the easiest option and the least desirable result.
Finishing the edges
Metal edge trim in brass or blackened steel reads as intentional and adds a detail that ties the panel to other metal elements in the room. Scribing to an adjacent surface is the right call when the adjacent surface is irregular.
FAQ
How long do wood wall panels need to acclimate before installation? 48 to 72 hours in the installation space. Extend to 5 to 7 days if room humidity differs from shop humidity by more than 15 percentage points.
Do wood wall panels need to be anchored into studs? Yes. Drywall anchors are not adequate. Every panel needs at least two fasteners into studs or blocking.
How do you handle inside corners on a slat wall? The cleanest result is a 45-degree miter on both panels. For out-of-square corners, coping one panel over the other is more forgiving.
Do you ship wood wall panels nationwide? Yes. We fabricate in Los Angeles and ship to all US states as a labeled, numbered kit with shop drawings and installation instructions.
