The set out is the design

On that wall the brass does two jobs at once. It draws the eye upward, and it lands exactly on the panel joints, so what would otherwise be a seam becomes a deliberate line. That only works if the panel widths come from the room rather than from a standard sheet size.

The spacing was calculated so the strips fall at even intervals across the whole wall, and so neither end of the run finishes on an awkward sliver. Get that wrong and the eye finds it immediately, usually from the doorway, which is the one place nobody stands when they are checking their own work.

The strips are flush with the veneer, set into a machined groove, so the wall reads as one surface under your hand rather than as panels with trim laid over the joints. Completed July 2022.

How the set out gets decided

  1. Measure the real wallPanel widths are calculated from what is there, including the door head and the ceiling line.
  2. Draw the jointsWhere every joint and every inlay lands is agreed on paper before material is ordered.
  3. Approve metal and finishBrass, matte black or none, with a sheen sample seen in the room own light.
  4. Machine and dry fitGrooves are cut to the thickness of the metal, and the wall is assembled in the shop first.
  5. InstallOur crew, scribed to the room, with the inlay meeting exactly at every joint.

Questions

Why not use standard panel widths?

Because the joints would land wherever the sheet size decided. Setting the widths from the room puts the joints where the wall already has a line, and lets an inlay land on them deliberately.

Is the brass applied on top of the panel?

No. It sits in a machined groove flush with the veneer, so the wall stays one continuous surface.

Can you do matte black instead of brass?

Yes. Inlays are machined into the face in brass or matte black. The method is the same, only the metal changes.

What if my wall is not square?

Very few are. The template records what is actually there, and the panels are scribed to it on site.
