Routine cleaning
Dust the panels monthly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth in the direction of the grain. For fingerprints and light smudges, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth followed immediately by a dry cloth. Do not let water sit on the surface. For grease near a kitchen, use a small amount of dish soap diluted in water, then wipe with a clean damp cloth, then dry immediately.
Do not use: spray cleaners with ammonia or bleach, oil-based polishes on a lacquer or polyurethane finish, silicone-based furniture sprays, or abrasive cleaners.
Protecting the finish from UV
UV light changes the color of wood over time. White oak lightens and the gray undertone becomes more pronounced. Walnut fades from dark brown toward a warmer medium brown. UV-resistant window film on adjacent glass is the most effective protection, blocking 99% of UV. Reapplying a UV-resistant topcoat every 5 to 7 years extends the protection.
Humidity management
The target range for a room with wood panels is 35 to 55% relative humidity year-round. A whole-house humidifier in winter and air conditioning in summer keeps most rooms in this range. A hygrometer costs $15 and tells you where your room actually is.
Repairing scratches and dents
Light scratches in the finish can often be repaired with a finish touch-up pen matched to the sheen of the original finish. Deeper scratches require spot refinishing: sand lightly with 220-grit paper in the direction of the grain, apply matching stain if needed, and apply two coats of the original finish. Dents in solid wood can sometimes be raised by applying a damp cloth and a warm iron to the dent.
When to refinish
The finish needs attention when: the surface feels rough or dry, water no longer beads on the surface, the color has changed significantly from UV exposure, or there are multiple scratches that touch-up cannot address. For panels that can be removed, we offer refinishing service in our shop.
