Room Dividers That Don't Look Like Room Dividers

Aug 17, 2026
Room Dividers That Don't Look Like Room Dividers

The problem with most room dividers is that they look like room dividers. A folding screen looks like a folding screen. A bookshelf used as a divider looks like a bookshelf used as a divider. A wood partition built to the dimensions of the opening reads as architecture.

Slat partition: open, directional privacy

A slat partition uses vertical slats spaced to provide privacy from one angle and openness from another. Standing directly in front of the partition, you see through it. Standing at an angle, the slats overlap and the view is blocked. This is useful in open-plan spaces where you want to define zones without closing them off. Light passes through. Air passes through. Sound passes through, which is a limitation if acoustic separation is the goal.

Panel partition: solid, architectural

A panel partition uses solid veneered panels. It reads as a wall, not as a screen. It provides visual privacy from all angles and some acoustic separation. The key details: the partition should go floor to ceiling or close to it, the top should be finished cleanly, and the sides should terminate at a wall or column rather than floating in the middle of the space.

Double-sided partition: finished on both faces

A standard partition has a finished face and a back. A double-sided partition is finished on both faces, so it reads as intentional from both sides of the opening. This is the right specification for any partition visible from both sides: a divider between a living area and a dining area, a partition in a hotel lobby seen from the entrance and from the seating area.

Freestanding vs fixed

A freestanding partition does not attach to the floor, ceiling, or walls. It stands on its own weight and a base structure. This is the right choice for rental spaces or spaces where attaching to the structure is not possible. A freestanding partition needs to be heavy enough to be stable. We engineer the base structure for stability and conceal it within the panel depth. A fixed partition attaches to the floor, ceiling, or both and can be taller and thinner.

FAQ

What is the difference between a slat partition and a panel partition? A slat partition uses spaced vertical slats that provide directional privacy and allow light and air to pass through. A panel partition uses solid veneered panels that provide visual privacy from all angles.

Can a room divider be finished on both sides? Yes. A double-sided partition is finished on both faces so it reads as intentional from both sides of the opening.

Does a wood slat room divider provide acoustic separation? No. A slat partition allows sound to pass through freely. If acoustic separation is the goal, a solid panel partition or a full wall is the right solution.

Can a wood room divider be freestanding? Yes. We engineer freestanding partitions with a concealed base structure for stability.

Do you ship custom room dividers nationwide? Yes. We fabricate in Los Angeles and ship to all US states.
