Laid up on a bench, not on the wall
The Manhattan Beach wall is built from small wood pieces laid in a repeating field. Each piece sits at a slightly different depth, so the surface has texture you can read from across the room and detail you only notice up close.
Work like this is assembled in the shop, never on site. The pieces are laid onto backing panels on a bench, where they can be aligned properly, and the finished panels are hung as units. Placing small pieces one by one on a vertical wall gives you a pattern that drifts as it climbs and an installation that takes far longer than it should.
The oak was tinted rather than left natural. A tint moves the tone of the room while keeping the grain visible, and on a surface with this much depth the colour has to be even across every piece, so it is approved against a sample before the field is laid up.

Questions
Do you install in Manhattan Beach?
Yes. Manhattan Beach is inside the area our own crew covers. We completed a tinted oak mosaic wall here in June 2023.
Is a mosaic wall installed piece by piece?
No. The pieces are laid up on backing panels in our shop and the finished panels are hung as units. Placing pieces one by one on a vertical wall gives a drifting pattern and a very long installation.
Why set the pieces at different depths?
Depth is what gives the wall texture you can read from across the room and detail you see up close, without adding colour.
Can the oak be tinted?
Yes. Tints are matched to a sample and approved in the light of the room before the pieces are cut.
Who actually does the work?
One shop. We draw it, build it in Chatsworth and install it with our own crew.
