We work with wood every day, and the same question comes up in almost every first meeting: slats or traditional paneling? Both look good. They solve different problems, though, and they behave differently once they are on a real wall in a real Los Angeles room with real sunlight and a real deadline.
This is the field guide we wish clients had before the first mood board. It comes from what we actually build and install around LA.
What slat wall panels are
Slat panels are linear battens mounted on a rigid backer, usually acoustic felt. The effect is rhythm: crisp lines, shadows that move as the light changes, a surface that reads as built rather than applied. We fabricate them on MDF or plywood cores with walnut, oak or ash veneer, and in solid wood when the project justifies it. Finishes run from natural oil and matte polyurethane to blackened and stained tones.
Why LA clients pick slats
- Modern without shouting. Slats bring geometry to a room. They sit well next to concrete, glass and simple furniture.
- They quiet a room. With felt backing and the right spacing, slats absorb enough sound to make a noticeable difference in Zoom rooms, media dens and open offices. You hear it as soon as the echo drops.
- Serviceable. Cable runs, junction boxes, integrated lighting, removable sections for maintenance. All of that can live behind the slats.

What traditional wood paneling covers
Traditional paneling is a whole family: shiplap, tongue and groove, beadboard, board and batten, wainscoting, raised and flat panels with stiles and rails. It is the vocabulary of classic interiors, coastal through formal, and it adapts to almost anything. Paint grade means MDF with lacquer. Stain grade means oak, walnut, maple or pine.
Why LA clients pick paneling
- Character that does not date. It works with mouldings, arches and built-ins, which is exactly what LA historic and mid-century houses already have.
- Finish flexibility. Paint grade makes color changes and touch-ups easy. Stain grade shows the grain.
- Budget control. Species, profile and finish process each move the number. You can build the same design at very different price points.

Design intent: rhythm or profile
Slats read contemporary. Vertical runs add height, horizontal runs widen. We often carry them onto the ceiling or around an inside corner so the surface wraps instead of stopping. A brass or matte black inlay pushes it further.
Paneling reads calm. Wainscoting anchors a room, shiplap gives it gentle movement, raised panels make it formal. If the room already has crown moulding, traditional doors or arched openings, paneling agrees with them.
One planning note. In open-plan spaces, slats separate zones without building walls. In formal rooms, paneling frames art and furniture the way a gallery does.
Acoustics
We have installed both in rooms where echo was the reason for the call.
Slats with acoustic backing produce real NRC gains, meaning the surface absorbs rather than bounces. Speech on video calls gets clearer, flutter echo drops, and the room settles down before you add a single rug.
Traditional paneling reflects. It looks beautiful and does nothing for the noise. When acoustics matter and the client still wants paneling, we pair it with soft elements or hide acoustic cores in the zones that need them.
Favor slats in podcast rooms, media dens, open offices, hard-surface lofts and glass-heavy conference rooms.
Installation, timing and site conditions
Substrate and prep
Flat walls matter more than people expect. Slats are ruler straight, so they expose every hump in the drywall. We shim or add furring strips when a wall is wavy.
Moisture is the other one. Coastal humidity and valley dryness are not the same climate, and LA has both. We acclimate material and talk through HVAC so seams stay tight.
Cabling gets mapped before anything goes up: TV mounts, outlets, LED runs. Cutting into a finished surface later is how a clean wall stops being clean.
Method
Slats go up as panelized systems on cleats, with adhesive and screws, edge trims and mitered corners. Ceilings need a precise layout and proper anchors.
Paneling means finding studs, nailers and adhesive, careful miters, caulking, and for paint grade a full sanding and finishing cycle.
How long it takes
A single slat feature wall is usually 1 to 2 days on site. Traditional paneling runs 1 to 3 days depending on profile and finishing. In offices we often work evenings or weekends so nobody loses a workday.
Living with it
Slats collect dust in the grooves. A vacuum brush and a microfiber cloth handle it. Veneer repairs stay local; solid wood can be sanded back and refinished. We specify low-VOC finishes so the room is usable quickly.
Paint-grade paneling touches up easily. Stain grade needs a steadier hand to match color. In busy corridors we usually push the sheen up a step so it wipes clean.
One LA-specific warning: a wall that bakes in afternoon sun will shift tone over time. We will tell you which finishes hold up and where a window treatment is worth the money.
What it costs
Species, finish, complexity and access all move the number, so a real figure comes with a real drawing. How we think about it:
Slats give the highest change per dollar. One wall can reset a room, fix the acoustics and photograph like a magazine spread.
Paneling scales. Paint grade is affordable, hand-built hardwood is not, and everything in between is available. It can also be phased across rooms without looking unfinished.
Our fabrication is quoted per project. Installation is quoted separately. We produce a 3D visualization first, so the design is settled before we cut anything.
Code and fire rating
Commercial interiors sometimes need Class A or Class B rated finishes and specific California Building Code compliance. FSC-certified wood and low-VOC finishes come up often in wellness-focused projects. When an architect or GC is involved we coordinate early, so the specification clears permitting without a scramble.
Choose slats if
- The room is echoey and you do not want to fix it with more soft furniture
- You want a modern, sculptural focal point next to concrete, glass and clean-lined furniture
- Cables and lighting need to disappear into the wall
- You want the surface to continue from wall to ceiling
- The space is client-facing: reception, conference room, hospitality front of house
Choose traditional paneling if
- The house is period or transitional and you want that character kept
- You expect to change wall color and want touch-ups to be simple
- The room should feel formal or cozy: dining room, hallway, library, boutique hotel
- There are mouldings, arches and built-ins for it to work with
- You want a path from simple profiles up to artisan work as budget allows
Or mix them
We do this often. Combinations that work:
- Slatted feature wall with wainscoting below, which also protects a busy hallway
- Slatted ceiling over classic paneled walls: rhythm overhead, calm at eye level
- Brass or matte black inlays set into either field
- A CNC-routed parametric accent in one zone, quieter traditional runs elsewhere
Hybrids work best in open-plan homes and offices, where each zone should read as its own space without breaking the whole.
Before you decide
- Ceiling height. Vertical slats stretch a room upward. Wainscoting grounds a tall one.
- Lighting. Slats want grazing light, track or linear LED, to deepen the shadow lines. Paneling wants wall washers to smooth the profiles.
- Art and furniture. A slat wall is already sculpture, so keep the art few and bold. Paneling is a frame and takes galleries and mirrors well.
- Dust and pets. Grooves catch dust. Panel profiles catch less but show scuffs more. Match the sheen to how the room actually gets used.
- Future changes. Repainting every two or three years favors paneling. Fixing acoustics now favors slats.
FAQ
Do slat panels actually help acoustics in a home office?
Yes, with acoustic felt behind them. The room tightens up: fewer echoes, clearer voices on calls.
Can slats go on the ceiling or around a TV?
Both, regularly. For a TV we plan the mounting points and cable routes first so everything stays accessible and nothing shows.
Veneer or solid wood?
Veneer over a stable core is dimensionally steadier, finishes more consistently and costs less. Solid wood is heavier and more expensive, and it is the right call when the design and the structure both support it.
Will either work near a kitchen or bathroom?
With the right finish and ventilation, yes. We advise on moisture-resistant coatings and expansion gaps, and we say so plainly when a space is not suitable.
What is the lead time in Los Angeles?
A 3D visualization takes 2 to 5 business days. Fabrication and installation are scheduled after that based on scope and site access, and you get exact dates with the quote.
How we work
Consult and visualize. Send a sketch, a mood board or a full drawing set, whatever exists. We come back with materials, slat spacing or panel profiles, and a 3D visualization of your actual room.
Specify and sample. We ship sample kits, refunded against project spend, and confirm the finish: walnut, oak, ash, blackened, brass or matte black inlay, and sheen.
Fabricate and install. Our own LA crew handles substrate prep, cable planning, edge terminations and miters. On commercial sites we work off-hours when that is what the schedule needs.
Stand behind it. We are local. Service calls, adjustments and later additions are not somebody else problem.

Classic warmth, predictable repaint cycles, mouldings you love: traditional paneling.
