A wall panel is only as good as the day it goes up. We have been called in to fix enough other people's work to know exactly where installations go wrong, so here is how our crew actually works and what to ask whoever is doing yours.
Why the install decides the result
Panels, slat walls and room dividers are unforgiving surfaces. They are made of long straight lines, and a long straight line sitting on a wavy wall shows every millimeter of that wave. Three things ride on the installation.
Safety. A floor-to-ceiling divider that is not properly fixed at both ends is a hazard, particularly in a house with kids or a commercial space with foot traffic.
Longevity. Wood moves with humidity. Fixings that ignore that will open a seam within a season.
Looks. Alignment, edge terminations, how the panel meets an outlet or a door casing. That is the whole difference between a wall that looks built and one that looks applied.
What we do before anything goes on the wall
We measure the wall, not the drawing. Laser, stud finder, tapping for hollows. Walls are rarely square and ceilings are rarely level, and we would rather know that in the shop than on installation day.
We flatten what needs flattening. Furring strips or shims where the substrate wanders. This is the step people skip and then wonder why the shadow lines look bent.
We map services. Outlets, switches, vents, TV mounts, LED runs and speaker cable get located and planned before the first cut. Cutting into a finished veneer surface later never looks the same.
We plan the layout. Where the seams fall, where the pattern starts and stops, how it resolves at the corner. Getting this wrong is why so many feature walls end in a half-width panel.
On the day
Panels arrive prefinished from our shop, so there is no sanding or spraying in your living room. They go up on cleats or a substructure, with adhesive and mechanical fixings into structure, and edge trims at windows, casings and inside corners.
Dividers get engineered fixings at floor and ceiling. Ceilings get proper anchors and a layout that respects sprinklers, HVAC and lighting.
Floors and furniture get covered. We clean up at the end of each day, not at the end of the job.
Working in an occupied space
Most of our commercial work happens at night or on a weekend, because nobody should be trying to take a client call next to a track saw. In houses we mask like a paint crew and keep dust contained.
For offices we also build in access: panels that come off for IT, service gaps for LED drivers, reinforcement at corners and bases where chairs and cleaning equipment will hit.
Code and compliance
Commercial interiors in California sometimes require Class A or Class B rated finishes, and tall partitions need to be fixed and stable, not just heavy. Egress paths stay clear. When an architect or general contractor is on the project we coordinate early so the specification clears inspection without a last-minute redesign.
Questions worth asking any installer
- Will you template the wall on site before fabricating, or build to my measurements?
- What happens where the panel meets an outlet or a door casing?
- How are you fixing a floor-to-ceiling divider, and to what?
- Is the finish applied in your shop or on my floor?
- Who comes back if a seam opens in six months?
If the answers are vague, that is the answer.
